London’s European dream comes to an end as Lyon progress to the next round with a 13-3 aggregate win where they will face Austrian side RHC Dornbirn.
Knowing they needed to overturn an adverse score the Dragons made a strong start to the game with high pressure and controlling the possession of the ball. The quick pace and control saw the Dragons rewarded with few chances in the initial minutes, however Lyon’s defence held strong. Ten minutes into the game the Dragons were given two chances from the free direct spot, though these were poorly taken. The French side soon made London pay, taking advantage of their first chance of the game with a long distance shot finding its way through a crowded penalty area and beating Carlos, who wouldn’t have seen the ball until late. Shortly after Lyon further extended their lead with a deflected finish from a high ball into the area. With the aggregate score now at 2-8, it would be a big ask for London to turn the result around. The Dragons kept fighting but they could not finish their chances and they saw themselves 3-0 down at half time.
The second half started with the visitors pressing and looking to further extend their lead and they scored two quick goals, one from a counter attack and immediately after from the the free hit spot. At that point, London started to push themselves and created more chances which were either stopped by the posts or the Lyon keeper. It would be made clear it was not the best day in attack for the Dragons later on when the English side missed 4 more penalties. However London never stopped fighting and were eventually rewarded for their efforts with Daniel and Victor scoring a goal apiece.
Whilst the European dream may be over, it has been an excellent experience for the London side and shows just how far the club has come in such a short period of time. Having only been founded in 2015, to be competing on the European stage is a testament to the hard-work and commitment from those at the club, past and present. London now look ahead to their upcoming fixtures in which the squad depth is sure to be tested with the team competing on three fronts.
We would again like to say a big thank you to our sponsors and all those that have contributed to the fundraising effort. Without your support this European campaign would not have been possible! @betterbodygroup @animaldynamic
Good luck RHC Lyon for the next round and the rest of your season!
