Premier League: Soham 4-4 London

On Saturday 25th May London travelled to Soham for their penultimate game of the season knowing that just a point would secure 2nd spot in the National Premier League and European competition in 2019/20. This would be no easy feat given that the Dragons were forced to travel with just 5 players and 1 goalkeeper.

After an intense opening 10 minutes with chances at either side it was London who struck first. Joel played a through ball to the on charging Inaki who rounded two players before being taken down. Daniele smashing the ball into the top corner from the spot. Unfortunately soon after London’s concentration dropped and they conceded through an individual error for Soham to tie the game.

The half continued at a fast pace with an equal split of possession before London took the lead for the second time, again through Joel and Inaki. London’s no.7 rounded two players on the flank before slotting a through ball across the box for Inaki to neatly slot home. Again however London switched off soon after and another individual mistake led to Soham being unmarked in the box and able to equalise. The game remained level going into the break.

At the start of the 2nd half Soham surprised their visitors with a goal from centre, a long distance slap shot finding its way through a crowded defence and into the London net. London’s team spirit wouldn’t allow this lead to last long however and began to dominate the game. This time they were rewarded themselves when Daniele scored a very clever direct free hit after a Soham player was blue carded for verbal. In fact tempers didn’t end there with Soham shown a further two blue cards including one for raising a stick to an opposition chest against London’s one.

Despite London’s continued domination in the second half they were tiring having just one sub and conceded a fourth this time through a goal mouth scramble, but it was not the end and an equaliser came when Joel swept a first time shot from distance to the top left corner of the goal.

The game continued at a fast pace until the end and although London were aggrieved not to have made their dominance pay, their point secures them a spot in next season’s CERS Cup.

An enjoyable game and well done to every travelling Dragon for a great display.
